Brooklyn CB8 Transportation Committee approves DOT plan for Prospect Heights Neighborhood Slow Zone

On Tuesday, May 26, the Transportation Committee of Brooklyn Community Board 8 approved a plan by the New York City Department of Transportation to implement a Neighborhood Slow Zone (NSZ) in Prospect Heights. In October 2013, Prospect Heights was one of 15 neighborhoods selected from among 74 applicants to receive a NSZ. PHNDC applied to the program on behalf of Prospect Heights, gathering support from more than 1,300 individuals through an online petition.

Bike to work on Earth Day with Borough President Eric Adams

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is starting Earth Day with a special bike-to-work ride from Grand Army Plaza to Borough hall, and you're invited!

The event will begin with a press conference at 8:00AM Wednesday, April 22 at Grand Army Plaza. Following the press conference, participants will ride down Vanderbilt Avenue and turn left onto Bergen Street, then on to Borough Hall, showcasing the bike lanes added to Brooklyn neighborhoods over the last decade.

Bring your bike and join the fun. The ride is sponsored by Borough President Adams, CitiBike, Transportation Alternatives, PHNDC and other Brooklyn civic organizations.

At the April CB8 Transportation Committee meeting, representatives from the Brooklyn Department of Transportation will present plans for implementing a Neighborhood Slow Zone in Prospect Heights. In 2012, PHNDC gathered more than 1,300 petition signatures and received 35 letters of support for the proposed NSZ from elected officials, civic groups, schools, daycare centers, residential facilities and houses of worship. Prospect Heights was chosen for a NSZ in 2013.

"Gridlock" Sam Schwartz to present Move NY plan at public forum Thursday 2/19

A coalition of neighborhood groups, merchants associations, and elected officials representing Downtown and brownstone Brooklyn today announced a town hall meeting to discuss how to address the challenge posed to all New Yorkers by crumbling transportation infrastructure, growing congestion, and rising tolls and transit fares. The focus of the town hall meeting will be a plan put forward by Move NY, a transportation policy group.
 
“Gridlock” Sam Schwartz – a former NYC Traffic Commissioner – will present the Move NY plan, a leading proposal to address New York City’s numerous transportation needs in a comprehensive fashion.  Members of the community will have the opportunity to discuss the plan during break out sessions to take place after the initial presentation.  The town hall meeting is open to the public and will be held on February 19 at 6:00 PM EST at Brooklyn’s 3rd Avenue YWCA. Interested New Yorkers are encouraged to participate in the conversation on social media using the hashtags #MoveNYBK and #fillthegapNY.
