Mayor Bloomberg’s office recently announced a plan to close the midtown Manhattan Intake Center and force all homeless men seeking shelter to travel from every borough of New York City to the Armory in Crown Heights.

The City plans to convert current intake center into a hotel and conference center. The Department of Homeless Services has said the changes are scheduled to go into effect by September 2008.

The losers in this plan will be thousands of the City’s most vulnerable citizens who will have to travel long distances to find a bed for the night and a Brooklyn neighborhood already over-saturated with more than its fair share of residential social service beds.

The Crown Heights Revitalization Movement (CHRM) is leading a coalition of civic groups, homeless advocacy organizations and elected officials who oppose the Mayor's plan as being bad for the homeless and bad for central Brooklyn.
