Wrought iron gates stolen from Prospect Heights homes

Prospect Heights residents should be aware that a significant number of wrought iron gates have recently been stolen. On Prospect Place alone, between Vanderbilt and Underhill, five gates have recently been stolen from homes and apartment buildings. It appears the thieves perform their nefarious deeds at night using a truck. Victims are urged to call 311 file a police report to increase police vigilance and to possibly retrieve their stolen gate.

Eastern Parkway renovation moving ahead in three phases

Eastern Parkway is now a three phase project, set to begin int he fall of 2009 and complete all phases within eighteen months.

  • Phase 1 is replacement of the sewer/water main under the main roadway, to be done by DEP.
  • Phase 2 involves regrading of the main road, to be done by DOT. It is expected that most of the Washington Avenue/Eastern Parkway flow improvements will be incorporated in this phase.
  • Phase 3 includes the repair and widening of the median, from Washington to the Plaza. The NYC Department of Parks has the lead on this phase, but DOT will be involved as well.

Landmarks Commission designates Prospect Heights Historic District

On June 23, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Prospect Heights Historic District. With approximately 850 buildings, the new district is the largest created in over twenty years, and ranks as the fifth largest historic district in New York City overall. “Prospect Heights is among Brooklyn’s most distinguished, cohesive neighborhoods because of its architectural integrity and diversity, scale, tree-lined streets and residential character,” said LPC Chairman Tierney. “These features lend the neighborhood its unique sense of place, making it a natural for historic district status.”

North Flatbush BID initiates streetscape project

The North Flatbush Business Improvement District has secured the expertise of a landscape architect/urban planner to come up with a plan to improve the flow and functionality of Flatbush from Atlantic to Plaza Streets. A preliminary meeting was held on April 22, 2009 during which the firm offered preliminary ideas on what was possible and what other cities had done when confronted by similar circumstances.

DOT plans safety improvements for Carlton Ave./Park Place intersection

As a result of study requested by PHNDC in conjunction with the North Flatbush BID, Brooklyn DOT is planning safety improvements to the intersection of Flatbush Avenue, Carlton Avenue, and Park Place. The intersection has long been perceived by area residents as dangerous for pedestrians.
