At the Fort Greene Association's November 2016 open meeting, "Fort Greene & NYC Neighbors Look to the Future," representatives from Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and New Yorkers for a Human-Scale City discussed some of the pros and cons of high-rise development in Downtown Brooklyn.
The purpose of the Nov. 13, 2017 meeting is to continue this discussion as it relates to this new proposal for 80 Flatbush Avenue - a 74-story building on a full block site bordering Flatbush, Schermerhorn, State and Third Aves. Concerns include the scale of the project as it abuts a low-rise brownstone neighborhood, the blocking of sight lines of the Williamsburgh Clock Tower, and adverse environmental impacts.

The Land Use Committee of Community Board 8 reviews applications for zoning changes, variances, historic designations, and building permits in historic districts.
The September meeting include a review of a zoning change application from the owners of 587 Bergen Street. The property is currently zoned M1-1 and is vacant. The owners are asking that it instead be included in the boundary of the neighboring R6B zone to allow for the construction of a four-story apartment building. An earlier presentation by the owners indicated the building will contain 26 apartments, with 10 being affordable, and 13 below-ground parking spaces.

Steven Semes is the Academic Director of the Rome Studies Program as well as Associate Professor and the Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Notre Dame. His current research focuses on the issue of defining appropriate new architecture in historic settings.
Panelists include Simeon Bankoff, Executive Director of the Historic Districts Council; and Richard Cameron, Principal at the design firm Atelier & Co.

On Monday, October 12, the web site DNAinfo reported that the City’s Department of Buildings has granted permits for the demolition of the Green Point Savings Bank building at 856 Washington Avenue. Its owner intends to replace the building with a 14-story condominium. The new tower is allowed under the lot's current R8X zoning, which wraps around Washington Avenue from Eastern Parkway.
The Green Point Savings Bank building was designed by architect Francis George Hasselman (1877-1932) and completed in 1928. Hasselman is known for designing Rosemary Hall, ca. 1904, Old Westbury, NY; Anderson Park, ca. 1910, Montclair, NJ; In-the-Oaks, 1923, Asheville, NC; and the Spring Brook House, 1904, Morristown, NJ. The latter two buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
