Volunteers needed for Underhill Playground lock up

Posted: July 5, 2010 - 12:00am

Friends of Underhill Playground is organizing volunteers to help with locking up the playground at night.

Why lock up?

The Parks Department is coming by the playground to turn off the sprinklers (approximately 6:00 PM), but does not have the staff to do a later lock up. The Friends would like to help keep the playground open for everyone's enjoyment during the long summer days and lock-up at dusk when the park is officially closed.

Tell Albany it's time to reform Atlantic Yards oversight

Posted: June 23, 2010 - 12:00am

Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries’ bill (A11431) reforming Atlantic Yards governance has passed the Corporations, Authorities and Commissions Committee.

PHNDC and the other BrooklynSpeaks sponsors support the new legislation and are monitoring the legislative progress closely. "For the last three years, BrooklynSpeaks sponsors have advocated for transparency with respect to project governance, as well as for the involvement of the public in the decision-making process. This legislation is an important first step towards those goals,” said Jo Anne Simon, District Leader of the 52nd Assembly District. “We encourage all Brooklynites and New Yorkers concerned about accountability at Atlantic Yards to sign our online petition calling for swift passage of this legislation.”

The BrooklynSpeaks petition is available at https://www.PetitionOnline.com/reformay/petition.html.

Prospect Heights ranked among top ten livable neighborhoods in NYC

Posted: April 13, 2010 - 12:00am

Although it may not come as a surprise to its residents, Prospect Heights was named by New York magazine among the top ten in its survey of most livable neighborhoods in New York City. The survey profiles fifty neighborhoods in terms of housing cost, transit, shopping, safety, restaurants, schools and diversity, among other factors. The survey found Prospect Heights particularly strong in nightlife (10th) and restaurants (17th), and fifth with respect to diversity of its residents, something most all of us would agree makes ours a great neighborhood and a great community.

Posted: March 15, 2010 - 7:17pm

As New York City moves forward with plans to plant hundreds of thousands of new street trees throughout the five boroughs, residents of Prospect Heights are stepping up to the plate to care for our “urban forest.” The Prospect Heights Community Forest Initiative is working with our block associations, community gardens, and merchant groups, to provide residents and merchants with the knowledge, skills, material resources and organizational assistance necessary to become trusted stewards of their urban environment.
